The International Symbol of Access (ISA) was adopted in 1969 and registered with the International Standards Organisation "to identify, mark or show the way to buildings and facilities that are accessible to and usable by all persons whose mobility is restricted."
In 1993, Disabled Persons Assembly (DPA) gave to the Trust, the responsibility for managing the display of the ISA in New Zealand on their behalf. A memorandum of understanding formalises this arrangement. To read the Memorandum of Understanding between BFNZT and DPA.
The minimum levels of provision in building design that the symbol represents are:
- A barrier-free approach to and within the building
- Accessible parking (if any)
- An accessible entrance
- Accessible and usable facilities
- Accessible and usable toilets
Please contact one of our Barrier Free Advisors if you are concerned about the display of the ISA. Alternatively you can forward your concerns directly to the Department of Building and Housing.
Barrier Free NZ Trust and DPA (NZ) Inc. work in partnership to improve access to public places, spaces and services.
