Information for Architects

Training Seminars

We have created a 3 hour, tailored seminar aimed specifically for Architects and Designers and others interested in the design of Accessible buildings.  This seminar and others we provide qualify for Continuing Professional Development Points.

This seminar is designed to give an understanding of what is required in the design process to ensure an assessable built environment that complies with the NZ building legislation and is usable by all people, including people with disabilities.

Learning Objective

To understand how to design and document an accessible built environment that complies with the Building Act and the Building Code.

Content:

  • People with disabilities - statistics, types and aspects of disability, what it's actually like out there;
  • The Law - Building Act and Building Code requirements, consent process and compliance schedules;
  • Design information and techniques - compliance documents, alternative solutions, reviewing plans and using the Barrier Free NZ Trust checklists.

Technical Advice and Guidance

Barrier Free NZ Trust is often asked to provide technical guidance to projects at a local and national level.  We have a number of qualified and experienced consultants, in addition to the many Barrier Free Advisors, who can provide information, recommendations and accessibility audits. Contact the office at 04 915 5848, admin@barrierfreenz.org.nz or contact a Barrier Free Advisor direct.

Architect and Design Tertiary Curriculum

The Trust is currently exploring with Victoria University in Wellington and Uniitech in Auckland, for ways to encourage students of Architecture and Design to prioritise barrier free design.  We will keep you informed!
