We conduct regular seminars and workshops throughout New Zealand to provide training and information on issues of accessibility.
The Trust seeks to achieve enhanced public awareness and become the first educator in matters of access, particularly with:

- People seeking accreditation as Barrier Free Advisors

Barrierfree Trust 2008 Seminar Schedule
This year the Barrier Free Training Pathways seminar series consists of 5 modules. The modules, and dates for each module are given below.
MODULE 1-4 TWO-DAY SEMINAR

Time: 2 days
Cost: $500 + GST
This 2 day seminar covers Module 1 to 4. By successfully completing the Modules included (1-4), the seminar gives you the opportunity to further your training to become a Barrier Free Advisor and/or can qualify to be put forward as CPD Points.
Before attending the two day seminar, participants must be familiar with the Building Act 2004, Building Code and Compliance Documents, Building Regulations, and NZS 4121:2001.
MODULE 1: Experiencing the "Accessible Journey"

Time: 2 hrs 30 min.
Cost: $125 + GST
Module 1 is compulsory and is designed to give an understanding of the Accessible Journey and what it means for disabled people. This module will help raise awareness of how a barrier free and accessible environment could look like and what it means to be disabled by the physical environment.
Who should attend?
Everyone who would like to continue with other Training Modules (3, 4 and 5) or people who not familiar with the experience of barriers in the built environment and the Accessible Journey.

Assessment
In this assessment you will show your understanding of people’s experience of the Accessible Journey and its barriers in the built environment.
- 15 mins – after the first day of the seminar (from 4.30 – 4.45pm).
- Short answer test.
- $25 plus GST.
MODULE 2: The Law, Access, and the "Accessible Journey"

Time: 2 hrs
Cost: $100 + GST
Module 2 is compulsory and designed to inform about the building legislation and guidelines related to access requirements in the built environment. Participants must have a thorough understanding of the Building Act 2004, Building Code and Compliance Documents, Building Regulations, and NZS 4121:2001 before they undertake Module 3, 4, and 5.
Who should attend?
Everyone who would like to continue with other Training Modules (3, 4, and 5), or people who are not familiar with building legislation and guidelines.

Assessment
You will show that you understand how the building law and regulations relate to access requirements and the Accessible Journey.

- This is an open book assessment. Bring a copy of the Building Act 2004.
- $25 plus GST.
MODULE 3: Designing the “Accessible Journey”

Time: 3 hrs
Cost: $150 + GST
Module 3 is designed to give an understanding of what is required in the design process to ensure an accessible built environment that complies with the relevant documentation.
Who should attend?
Architects, designers, building owners, and other people interested in the designing of the Accessible Journey. Prospective Barrier Free Advisors.

Module 1 and 2.

- Practical exercise: Read and interpret plans for Access, reporting back, and discussion.
Assessment
You will demonstrate that you understand how an accessible built environment that complies with the relevant documentation is designed.
- Assessment to be done at home. (Take about 1 hour.)
- Reading of a plan of a public building. (Plan will be handed out at the seminar.)
- $50 plus GST.
- This Assessment must be handed in within 1 month after the seminar.
MODULE 4: Assessing the "Accessible Journey"

Time: 4 hrs 15 min. (Day 2 of the 2 day Seminar)
Cost: $210 + GST
Module 4 is designed to give an understanding of how to assess the Accessible Journey in the built environment using the Barrier Free Checklist and relevant documentation.
Who should attend?
Building Officials, assessors of disabled people’s environments, and other people interested in the assessment of the Accessible Journey. Prospective Barrier Free Advisors.

Module 1 and 2.
Content
- Overview of the legal requirements for Access.
- NZS 4121 – How this fits in.
- How to assess accessibility features during the construction process.
- Issuing Code Compliance Certificates – does it comply?
- Format and use of the Barrier Free Checklist.
- Practical exercise: Auditing a building, reporting back, and discussion.
Assessment
You will demonstrate that you understand how to assess the Accessible Journey in the built environment using the Barrier Free Checklist and building legislations and guidelines.
- Trial audit report on the building you have audited in the practical exercise of the seminar.

- $100 plus GST.
- This Assessment must be handed in within 3 months after the seminar.
MODULE 5: Advising and Auditing the “Accessible Journey”

Time: 6hrs and 15 min. (1 day)
Cost: $250 + GST
Module 5 is designed for people who wish to train as a Barrier Free Advisor. Attendees will learn to audit buildings and plans, and how to write a report.
ONE-DAY REFRESHER COURSE

Time: 1 day
Cost: $250 + GST
Only BFAs, those who have completed the BFT two day workshop in the past, and those who have completed Modules 1 to 4 are eligible to attend this seminar. It covers ‘hot topics’, case studies, legislative updates, determinations and overseas trends. You will have opportunity to discuss issues with the presenters and the other attendees.
Certificate of Competence
Seminar attendees will get a Certificate of Competence for the Modules they have successfully completed the individual assessments for. There will be no marks given on any of the assessments; people will either fail or pass.
BOINZ members
BOINZ members will get 4 extra CPD points for successfully completing the assessment of Module 4 (trial audit report) on top of the 8 CPD points received for seminar attendance.
NZRAB/NZIA
Participants may be eligible for New Zealand Registered Architects Board CPD points upon application for this seminar as an ‘Individual Activity’.
Barrier Free Advisor (BFA)
People who plan to become a BFA will need to do the individual assessments of all 4 Modules before attending Module 5.

Barrier Free Training is recognized by the Building Officials Institute of New Zealand (BOINZ) and participants will be eligible for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points upon satisfactory completion of training modules |

Barrier Free Training is recognized by the New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) and participants will be eligible to meet requirements of the New Zealand Registered Architects Board (NZRAB) for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points upon satisfactory completion of training modules. |
Assessment
Participants are given the opportunity to be individually assessed by the Barrier Free NZ Trust for each module. Please ensure that you indicate on the registration form if you would like to be assessed, or notify the office prior to the seminar. Although every participant will receive a Certificate of Attendance for each module, the assessment will indicate whether you are competent in the module. Barrier Free Advisors
To become a Barrier Free Advisor you must successfully complete Module 1 to 5. You will be assessed on project specific reports and be expected to meet certain requirements - more information will be given in the Modules. If you are interested in furthering your training to become a Barrier Free Advisor, please contact us at office@barrierfreenz.org.nz and we will guide you in the right direction

MINIMUM NUMBERS: All Barrier Free Trust events require minimum numbers of attendees to be registered for a given location, 14 days prior to the event. If minimum numbers are not reached by this date a general email will be sent to all on our data base giving notice of possible cancellation. If minimum numbers are still not reached after one week and the event is cancelled potential attendees will be advised of this and options available at alternative locations or alternative arrangement will be made.
